Disappointment – His Appointment
The 1970s were wonder-years for me.
I became a teenager in 1973.
I had an emotional crisis, which led me to fully devote my life to Christ in 1974.
And Christian Contemporary Music was coming of age.
Young Christians in the 70s enjoyed The Second Chapter of Acts, Love Song, Chuck Girard, and of course, Phil Keaggy.
In 1977, Phil Keaggy released an album entitled Love Broke Thru.
On that album was a song by the name of Disappointment.
At the age of 17, I listened to that song over and over again, not knowing the impact it would have on me in the years and decades to come.
In the early 80s, I went off to seminary with the hope that I would eventually be a full-time minister. Now at the age of 60, that dream is still unfulfilled.
I tried my hand at full-time magic and failed.
Today I have two master’s degrees. I am an SPHR and a SHRM-SCP, and I can’t find a job.
In my darkest days, the lyrics and melody of Phil Keaggy’s song comfort me:
“Disappointment – His appointment,
Change one letter, then I see
That the thwarting of my purpose
Is God’s better choice for me.”
If this is a dark day for you, think on Phil’s words, and then believe in God’s:
“I alone know the plans I have for you, plans to bring you prosperity and not disaster, plans to bring about the future you hope for.” – Jeremiah 29:11
Much love
