Read Books Ma Boy

“Read books ma boy,” was the mantra of my favorite dealer, Phil Thomas and later the mantra of my friend and mentor Denny Haney.

I am still learning the wisdom of those words.

If you are reading this blog with no interest in performing yourself, you might wonder why a dealer would urge a young disciple to read books instead of purchase props.

If you are a new magician or mentalist this mantra may frustrate.

If you are like so many performers you want the new prop.

The last thing you want to do is spend your hard-earned money on another book.

But what if I told you that the secret to that new and very expensive trick is in a book.

What would you say if I told you that the price of the book is a fraction of the cost of the prop?

The cost savings alone is reason enough to “buy books ma boy,” but there is more.

When you read, especially the classics, you learn principles.

Once you learn principles you can apply those principles in ways that are uniquely you.

The only way you are ever going to stand out from the pack is if you do “original” material.

I put the word “original” in quotes because, despite the assertions of so many magical inventors there are very few original principles that aren’t already in books.

What is original is the way the principle is applied within the context of a presentation that is uniquely your own.

This is the real reason to “read books ma boy,” because it will give you the foundation upon which you can build the show that will get you booked.

Reading books is now, has always been, and always will be the surest road to success regardless of your chosen field.

Books are the best investment.

Much love,
